March Programs
March 4th– Reach Your Goal Fitness Series #7 9:00am– 11:30am
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
Week 7- Go John portion -4 miles/moderate
March 5th– “Bug Theatre” 6:30pm-8:00pm
(Meet at the Nature Center)
This is a hit with the kids and you will be surprised how much you will enjoy it too!
First we will start with a presentation on different types of insects and spiders that live in the desert. Then we will head outside and create our own movie screen of bugs! We will light up the night to see what creepy crawlies want to visit us. We will see moths, beetles and even a praying mantis or two.
Bring flashlights and go easy on the bug spray!! Bug guides will be on hand.
March 6th – Did You Say Wildflowers? 10:00am-11:30 pm
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
Yes we're talking wildflowers! Come join the ranger on a moderate 3 mile hike that follows our Go John Trail. We will be talking about the beautiful wildflowers that have covered our landscape. Bring the camera, plenty of water and sturdy closed toed shoes.
March 6th - Enter The Clay Mine 1:00pm– 2:30pm
(Meet at the Group Campground)
Join us as we take a short hike and explore the history of our Clay Mine. We will go in this mine and see why it was used to produce an elixir to cure all of your ailments. This will be an easy half a mile hike that will follow our Clay mine from the campground. We will supply the helmets as long as you bring water and sturdy shoes!
March 10th – Discover the Flume 9:00am– 11:30am
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
Take a step back into our past as we visit an area of the park where our mining history is all around us. This easy 4 mile hike will bring you along our Slate and Flume trails where we will see an old mining camp, mines and a flume that was historically used to transport water. Wear sun protection and sturdy shoes and never forget plenty of water.
March 11th– Reach Your Goal Fitness Series #8 9:00am– 11:30am

Week 8- Go John portion/Slate/Jasper -4.5 miles/moderate
March 12th – Backyard Bird Watching 9:00am –10:30am
(Meet at the Clay Mine Trailhead / Campsite # 8)
Have you always wondered what bird is making that pretty sound in the morning or which one is building all those nests around your home? Join us and discover these birds and more as we have them come and visit us. We will visit an area of the park set up to view these amazing little fliers of the desert. Some binoculars and bird books will be on hand for use.
March 12th - Stargazing for Everyone 7:30pm– 9:30pm
(Meet at the Picnic Ramadas Parking Lot)
View the night sky and all its wonder with local stargazing experts Stargazing for
Everyone. They will be showing you the night sky like you have never seen it before. We will be viewing some images from the Hubble telescope and then looking at the night sky through professional telescopes. Bring the family as we discover the mysteries of the universe. Bring Comfortable Chairs and blankets to sit on.
March 13th – Nature and Wildflower Photography 101 10:00am –12:00pm
(Meet at the Nature Center)
Interested in Photography? Love taking pictures of nature, but not sure where to start or how to get that perfect picture? Join us for this informative hike to learn the basics of photography. There will be plenty of wildflowers to take pictures of! Always bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes.
March 13th – Map and Compass for Beginners 1:30pm –3:30pm
(Meet at the Nature Center)
Have you always wondered how to find your way using a map and compass? What happens when your batteries die on your GPS when in the backcountry? Having a map and compass should be a part of every outdoorsman’s backpack, but it is only as good as the person using it. Join us for this informative session where we will give you the basics in the classroom and then head out on the trail to apply the knowledge.
Bring your compass if you have one, park maps will be on hand.
March 17th – Hiking is for the Birds 9:00am– 10:30am
(Meet at the Nature Center)
This bird watching hike will teach you the basics on what birds you can find in Cave Creek Park. We will be identifying these beautiful birds by sight and sound as they go about their daily routines. You don’t have to be an expert for this bird adventure. This will be an easy 2 mile roundtrip hike. Bring binoculars, water and some sturdy shoes.
March 18th– Reach Your Goal Fitness Series Finale!!! 9:00am– 12:30pm

You have made it this far! Now for the long one! Keep it going!
Week 9- Go John Trail -6 miles/moderate to difficult at points
March 19th – Spring Into Wildflowers! 9:00am-11:30am
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
Spring is upon us and so are the wildflowers! This hike will take you on our 3.5 mile Overton/Go John loop trail and bring you past some of the most beautiful displays of flowers in the park. Bring plenty of water and sturdy closed toed shoes.
March 20th – Introducing….. The Desert! 1:00pm– 2:30pm
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
Are you new to the desert? Are you wondering what is out there in this amazing land?
We will be taking a short 1 mile hike on our Jasper trail and talk about all the amazing plants and animals that live in the desert. Once we are done you will never see the desert the same again!
March 24th – That Flower Was Used for What!! 10:00am-11:30am
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
This amazing land has much to offer and when the flowers are in bloom it offers even more. This amazing hike will show you how the wildflowers were used for medicinal purposes in the past. From poppies to penstemon everything out here had a use. This will be an easy 2 mile hike on our Slate Trail.
March 25th– Go John Fitness Hike 9:00am– 12:00pm
(Meet at the Go John Trailhead)
We are going to get out on our Go John Trail and enjoy this 6 mile moderate to difficult loop while getting a work out. If you have just finished the fitness series or weren’t able to make it last week here is your chance to get out there and stay consistent. Bring plenty of EXTRA water and sturdy closed toed shoes
March 26th– “Frontier Tour “ 9:00am– 11:00am
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
We are going to flashback to the past and visit the days of the Old West. We will be
visiting Cave Creek’s history and make you feel like you are riding the stagecoach. This easy 2 mile hike will bring you down our historic Slate Trail and visit an old mining site. Bring EXTRA water and some sturdy shoes.
March 26th - Wiggling and Walking Moonlight Hike 7:00pm-9:00pm
(Meet at the Slate Trailhead)
We will wiggle our way down the trail as we approach the Full Worm Moon. All the animals are out and about with spring coming. Get ready to hear Owls, Coyotes and some of our other desert dwellers. This will be an easy 2 mile hike along our Slate trail. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. Please bring a flashlight in case you need it.
March 27th – Spring Into Wildflowers! 9:00am-11:30am

There is nothing more beautiful than wildflowers in the desert! We will be taking an easy 2 mile hike on a portion of the Go John Trail. We will be talking about the colorful flowers of the desert and their uses today and years past. It is heating up so bring plenty of water and comfortable clothing.
